  • GEARS (Wall Street Research)
Get research, e-mail reports, and company reports from this site, founded by a former director of quantitative research at DL. Based on a proprietary pattern-recognition technology, the GEARS system analyzes 17 categories of data and makes buy and sell recommendations and boasts that some 60 percent are sell recommendations. Some research and tools are free, but reports cost $5 each (or $49.95/month, $599/year for 150 reports/month).

  • Investor Place (Wall Street Research)
Get free research and analysis from 17 investment professionals who post weekly or monthly reports. You won't find intraday market commentary because Investor Place focuses on longer-term plays and broader investment themes. Site provides a good selection of investing styles.

  • CyberInvest (Wall Street Research)
Free primers cover everything from banking to technical analysis. Compare broker services and other criteria with their brokerage guides. The site includes a decent list of links.

  • Morgan Stanley Dean Witter (Wall Street Research)
Brokerage's sharp (but slow) Web site includes the daily Global Economic Forum, reports from 15 economists around the world. Skip the corporate press releases and download free reports about technology. Check out the "Insights" section for useful reads, including predictions for the year.

  • Multex Investor (Wall Street Research)
A leading site for distributing Wall Street research to individual investors. While some of the research is free, most of it will cost you. Reports can cost $4 to $150 to access, usually about $10. The site has message boards and a free telecom-focused newsletter.

  • Zacks (Wall Street Research)
The venerable research house totally redesigned its earnings-focused Web site to include a cleaner, more logical interface that you can change to fit your preferences. Similar in design to a personal Yahoo! page; you can pick which data windows to put on your screen, including earnings-related information. The site includes a topnotch earnings-centered screener and now it is all free.
