former director of quantitative research at DL. Based on a proprietary
pattern-recognition technology, the GEARS system analyzes 17 categories of
data and makes buy and sell recommendations and boasts that some 60 percent
are sell recommendations. Some research and tools are free, but reports cost
$5 each (or $49.95/month, $599/year for 150 reports/month).

While some of the research is free, most of it will cost you. Reports can cost
$4 to $150 to access, usually about $10. The site has message boards and a
free telecom-focused newsletter.

The venerable research house totally redesigned its earnings-focused Web site
to include a cleaner, more logical interface that you can change to fit your
preferences. Similar in design to a personal Yahoo! page; you can pick which
data windows to put on your screen, including earnings-related information.
The site includes a topnotch earnings-centered screener and now it is all
free.
