The U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO) is a congressional watchdog, an independent and nonpartisan department that studies how the federal government spends taxpayer dollars. GAO reports to Congress and the heads of executive agencies (such as Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, Department of Defense, DOD, and Health and Human Services, HHS) about ways to make government more effective and responsive. On their Web site, you can access their archives, dating from 1975, and do a full text search of their Reports and legal products. The GAO also maintains FraudNet, a means to facilitate reporting of allegations of fraud, waste, abuse, or mismanagement of federal funds.

The United States GPO is part of the legislative branch of the federal government. Although the GPO was created primarily to satisfy the printing needs of Congress, today GPO is the focal point for printing, binding, and information dissemination for the entire federal community. Congressional documents, federal regulations and reports, IRS tax forms, and U.S. passports are all produced by or through GPO. GPO provides government information through a wide range of formats, including printing, microfiche, CD-ROM, and online technology through GPO Access.
