  • Xerox PARC Map Viewer (Maps)
The Xerox PARC Map Viewer was created in June 1993 by Steve Putz at Xerox Corporation's Palo Alto Research Center, as an experiment in providing interactive information retrieval via the World Wide Web. The Xerox PARC Map Viewer is a World Wide Web HTTP server that accepts requests for a World or USA map and returns an HTML document including an image of the requested map. Each map image is created on demand from a geographic database. An interactive site, the Xerox PARC Map Viewer lets you "zoom in" on any area of the world to see ever-more-detailed maps. You can click "down" to see more detail, but  when you zoom in, you find that there's no detail. But it's worth visiting if you're interested in the basic concept.
