How Did You Get Started as a Solo?
After deciding that I wanted to be my own boss, I incorporated,
then opened up a bank account, then obtained Occupational Licenses,
then loaned the Corp monies for start up expenses, then rented an
office and purchased a computer, fax and printer.
Got Any Start-up Tips for New Solos? Start
inexpensive, including no secretary unless starting with a big book
of business; find inexpensive space to rent (executive suites are
great because of referral business; keep bills to a minimum and profits
high; invite ideas from your friends and colleagues.
What's Your "Networking Secret" (how do you get
business)? Some advertising, attend some Chamber of Commerce
events in Coral Springs, but most of all, completely satisfy clients
because they will come back again and will refer business.

Your Hardware/Software of Choice: I prefer
Corel Word Perfect, although most non-attorneys only have Word,
so it's a good idea to use both.
Most Useful Legal Books: Rules
of Civil Procedure and Florida Statutes
Favorite Legal Research Tools: LEXIS, of course!
Most Rewarding Case: Each time I assist in
consummating a residential real estate closing in the face of sellers
and buyers who are at each other's throats. Pulling out
of the deal is extremely rewarding since the purchase/sale of one's
home is one of the most important events that will take place in
their lives.
Would You "Go Solo" Again? Why?
Without a doubt. Not only has it benefitted me from a financial
standpoint, but contrary to popular belief, at least for me, it
has been so much less stressful than working for a law firm, which
I did for over 10 years. Stress comes from not having control, which
you have very little in a law firm. In a solo practice you have
total control over your decisions. It's just you and your clients.
As long as you keep the clients happy, you will have a successful
solo practice.
