Overview: Among other things, defendants were not denied fair trial by joinder notwithstanding conflicts in testimony, as State offered plenary evidence of three defendants' guilt. Although the trial court violated the mandatory statutory procedure for jury selection in N.C. Gen. Stat. § 15a-1214, defendants failed to show any prejudice resulting therefrom.

Overview: Trial court did not err in failing to intervene ex mero motu during State's closing as 1) context for prosecutor's comments was to explain that defendant's lack of specific motive could not absolve him of responsibility for first-degree murder; and 2) reference to World Trade Center attack was not attempt to equate his acts to those of terrorists.
